The Region

The Kootenay Rockies

The Kootenay Rockies is one of the world's truly stunning environments. Mountains, rivers and lakes await you, combined with a relaxed and warm welcome from outdoor-oriented, adventure-loving communities. Undiscovered and unspoilt, the Kootenay Rockies offers excitement and relaxation in equal measure.

The Kootenay Rockies region sits in the East Kootenays of British Columbia, Canada. The area is bordered on the East with the majestic Rocky Mountains, and to the north and west by the splendour of the Purcell Mountain Range. The area is rich in wildlife, history, and warm, welcoming cities including Cranbrook, Kimberley, Invermere, and Fernie.

The tournament courses and accommodation are found largely in or near Cranbrook and Kimberley, but we encourage visitors to explore the delights of the region at your leisure.

Cities

The Kootenay Rockies region is home to many towns and communities, all worth exploring with unique heritage, points of interest, and hidden gems. The Mountains of Gold Tournament courses are located primarily near the larger city centres in the area, namely Cranbrook, Kimberley, and Invermere; however we encourage you to plan to stay a few days longer and take some time to explore this incredible area of British Columbia.

Set in a spectacular landscape that enjoys the best climate in Canada; hot summers, snowy winters, blue sky and plenty of sunshine, Cranbrook is the regional centre for the Kootenay Rockies and home to the retail and support infrastructure for the region.

Known as the City of Festivals, it is a great place to spend a little time.

What to do while visiting?

Featured attractions

Fort Steele is the original settlement, gold rush boom-town and North West Mounted Police Fort, before the railway crossing moved to the present site of Cranbrook. It is now preserved as a heritage town and makes for an excellent day out. The setting is fantastic, and certainly sets the context for the frontier lifestyle that still exists today. www.fortsteele.ca

3-hour hike from here takes you to another ghost town, Fishertown, or at least the remains of it.

Discover the mysteries of nature when you visit the Kootenay Trout Hatchery and Visitor Centre. An interpretive centre showcases aquariums, educational models and displays to show the life cycle of the fish at the Kootenay Hatchery: Rainbow and Westslope Cutthroat trout, Brook char and white sturgeon. The centre is open seven days a week.

Visit the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel and take a trip back in town while you climb aboard the "Great Trains." Immerse yourself in railway lifestyle from days gone by in this museum, which has gained national recognition for its focus on the "social history" of the railway. www.trainsdeluxe.com
